Suffering

I've started studying suffering throughout the Bible, and the purpose for which God uses it. I guess it is partially inspired by my internship coming up in a few weeks (eek), but the topic has also been preached to me quite a few times lately so I figured I would dig at it on my own as well. I think it is important for me as a counselor who is dealing with people at one of their most tragic times of life to fully grasp what I believe about suffering.
Here's a few points I've learned so far.
- suffering is used by God as a refining process, molding us into the image of His Son, who suffered and died for the world
- suffering is used to bring God glory. When going through the worst of times and still clinging to the hope of Christ, others will see the glory of God.
- suffering is the mark of a Christian who is truly willing to give it all away for the sake of righteousness
- suffering is part of living in a fallen world, and trying to deny or avoid it only causes one to fill their life with meaningless idols
